Shopee Shipping Fees for Sellers, Explained (Malaysia 2026)

The most confusing line in a Shopee Malaysia payout statement is the shipping one. The buyer pays shipping at checkout, the courier bills Shopee, and Shopee deducts from your payout whatever the actual delivery cost — which is calculated from the weight you declared in the listing. If your declared weight is wrong, the deduction is wrong, and it comes out of your money. This page explains the whole chain using Shopee's own documentation: who pays what, how the fee is calculated, what happens when the actual weight exceeds your declaration, and the claim process that gets overcharges back.

The five-step money flow (and where it bites)

Shopee's own overview of the SSL (Shopee Supported Logistics) shipment process runs like this:

  1. The buyer places an order to be shipped with an SSL partner.
  2. You pack the parcel and attach the Air Waybill printed from Seller Centre.
  3. You hand the parcel over (drop-off or pick-up) with no upfront payment — you never pay the courier directly.
  4. The SSL partner delivers and bills Shopee for the shipping fee incurred.
  5. Shopee pays the courier, then releases your payment balance — and here is the bite: if the actual shipping fee is higher than the estimate based on the weight you set in the listing, Shopee deducts the difference from your payout before releasing the balance.

So "buyer pays shipping" is only half the story. What you actually keep is:

payout = order amount − commission − transaction fee − platform support fee − (actual shipping fee − shipping fee the buyer paid, if actual > buyer-paid)

The last term is the one that turns a profitable order into a loss — and it is controlled by one number in Seller Centre: the weight in your product listing.

What the buyer pays vs. what the courier charges

The shipping rate card (effective 17 June 2024, per Shopee's SSL rates article) prices every parcel by channel × origin × destination × weight tier — West Malaysia, East Malaysia and Klang Valley (Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya) have separate tables, and there is a separate card for bulky & heavy (20 kg and above) and instant delivery. Two things to internalise from that rate card:

How weight is actually calculated: actual vs. volumetric

Couriers charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Shopee's packaging guidance is that when you input weight and dimensions in Seller Centre, you must include the product packaging measurements — the parcel as handed to the courier, not the naked product. If your listed weight/dimensions are lighter or smaller than the real packed parcel, the courier re-weighs, and the difference lands on your payout as a shipping adjustment.

The practical discipline that prevents most adjustments:

Check Why
Weigh the packed parcel (product + box + filler), not the product The courier bills the parcel you hand over
Include dimensions; volumetric weight can exceed actual for bulky-but-light goods Volumetric weight is calculated from L×W×H; light bulky items are charged as their volumetric equivalent
Re-verify after any packaging change A new box or extra bubble wrap can move the parcel into the next weight tier
Check the same weight tier in any claim photo proof Claims require photo proof weight/dimensions to match Seller Centre within the same weight tier

When the courier overcharges: the claim process

Sometimes the adjustment is not your fault — the courier mis-scans, or the billed weight tier simply does not match the parcel. Shopee's overcharged shipping fee claim policy exists for exactly this, and it has teeth if you respect the clock:

Eligibility window: within 45 calendar days from parcel handover to the logistics partner, or 30 days from delivery. Claims are filed via the Shopee Malaysia Overcharged Shipping Fee Form, single order or bulk (bulk requires the official Excel template, uploaded to Drive and linked in the form).

But read the exclusion list before you file — compensation is not payable when:

  1. The escrow (order payment) has not yet been released.
  2. The claim is filed outside the 45/30-day window.
  3. You selected "I will cover the shipping fee" for the order.
  4. You used the Split Order feature.
  5. You input incorrect dimensions in the listing (packaging not included).
  6. Your Seller Centre pick-up/drop-off address is in a different state from the actual one.
  7. Your photo proof does not match the Seller Centre weight/dimensions within the same weight tier.

For the claim itself you supply: the overcharge type, order ID, courier and tracking number, photo evidence, the volumetric weight, the weight input in Seller Centre, the shipping fee paid by buyer, the actual amount billed, and the amount overcharged. If you did not photograph the parcel before shipping, Shopee accepts a photo of a similar packed item as substitute proof.

Prevention beats claiming. Every rejected claim costs you the 45-day clock. The sellers who never file claims are the ones who weigh packed parcels and update listing weight the week they change packaging.

The buyer-side subsidy: where "free shipping" money comes from

Buyers on Shopee MY see shipping discounts at a minimum spend of RM15 or RM40 — the platform's Free Shipping Subsidies. From the seller's side, the mechanism that matters is in the fee rules: the logistics fee Shopee charges you is the actual shipping fee minus any shipping fee rebate the platform applies. The official page does not publish the platform/seller split of subsidies — that depends on the campaigns and programmes active on your shop — so treat the rebate as a line you verify from your own income statement, not a number you assume.

If you run your own shipping fee promotion (subsidising a fixed amount or full free shipping, up to 3 tiers, only the top spend tier can be set to free), that is your money explicitly: you are choosing to absorb part of the shipping fee as a marketing cost. The interaction rule from Shopee is that when platform vouchers and your seller promotion coexist, the system picks whichever gives the buyer the lower total shipping fee.

Putting a number on it

Shipping adjustments are a cost rate, and they belong in your per-order math like any fee:

expected shipping adjustment per order = (average adjustment when it happens) × (share of your orders that get re-weighed up a tier)

Example (illustrative, not a quotation): if a weight-tier re-bill costs RM3.50 on average and 8% of your parcels are packed heavier than declared, that is RM0.28 per order leaking out of payouts — roughly half a platform support fee, every single order, silently.

Model the baseline properly first: the free SEA Profit Calculator prices a reference order through the full Shopee MY fee stack — commission by category, 3.78% transaction fee, the RM0.54 platform support fee, first-mile freight from China and FX — so you know what the order should net before shipping adjustments muddy the water.
