What a Return Really Costs You (Shopee & TikTok Shop MY)
What a Return Really Costs You (Shopee & TikTok Shop MY)
Almost every guide to returns explains the buyer's process. This one is about the seller's money: exactly which charges come back when an order is returned or refunded, which do not, and who pays each shipping leg. The answer is not "you lose everything", but it is also not "the refund just reverses the sale".
The three separate things people call "the refund"
| Scenario | What the buyer gets | What happens to your money |
|---|---|---|
| Refund Only (no item sent back) | Money back, item stays with buyer | You lose the sale and the goods; the platform may still refund on the buyer's claim after review |
| Return & Refund (item comes back) | Money back after the item is returned | You lose the shipping legs (see below) and any unsellable goods; the sale is reversed |
| Non-receipt ("I did not receive order") | Money back | With Shopee Supported Logistics (SSL), Shopee investigates the parcel status; with non-SSL you must produce shipment evidence yourself |
Which one applies is decided in Shopee's review — and its agents may amend the reason and the solution during that review, which changes who pays which shipping fee.
What comes back, and what doesn't
Commission — does not apply to returned orders. Shopee's own definition is explicit: "Total completed orders refer to total paid orders delivered to and accepted by the buyer… This excludes cancelled or returned/refunded orders, and orders pending delivery." Commission is charged on completed orders (on the product price after seller discounts and vouchers, plus 8% SST), so a returned order is not a commission event in the first place.
Transaction fee — charged on completion. Shopee charges 3.78% (after SST) of the final order amount paid by the buyer, inclusive of shipping fee, and deducts it when the order is completed. Whether a subsequently returned order reverses that line is not stated in the fee article — check the actual line in My Income → My Tax Invoices rather than assuming either way.
Platform Support Fee — read both platforms carefully.
- Shopee MY: RM0.54 (after SST) is charged on completed orders.
- TikTok Shop MY: the RM0.50 / RM0.54 (incl. 8% SST) per successfully delivered order explicitly does not come back — TikTok's own wording is that for orders delivered and then returned or refunded, "the Platform Support Fee shall not be refunded to sellers."
That single sentence is why we treat the support fee as a per-delivery cost, not a per-sale cost.
Logistics — this is the real bill. Shopee charges an Unsuccessful Order Fee on orders approved for return/refund. It is levied by the logistics partners and covers the Forward Shipping Fee (FSF) and/or the Return Shipping Fee (RSF). FSF is the actual shipping fee charged by the partner plus Shopee's shipping fee rebate, rounded up to two decimals. It applies to unsuccessful orders from 9 May 2022 onwards — i.e. it is not new, and it is not optional.
Who pays which shipping leg
From Shopee's Refunds and Return Policy (section 7):
| Situation | Forward shipping | Return shipping |
|---|---|---|
| Unforeseen error on the seller's side (damaged, faulty, incomplete, wrong item) | Seller | Seller |
| Buyer and seller agree on a refund | As agreed | Seller (buyer needs seller's consent first) |
| Malaysia: both parties dispute liability | Shopee decides at its sole discretion | Shopee decides; the buyer may bear it if they exceeded their quota for the "original/sealed condition" reason |
In other words: if the return is your fault, you eat both legs. If it is a genuine grey area, Shopee allocates it — and the buyer's own return quota is part of that decision.
The operational trap: refunds can happen without your confirmation for ever
The refund is normally released after Shopee receives your confirmation that the returned item arrived. But the policy adds that if Shopee does not hear from you within a specified time, it is at liberty to refund the buyer without further notice to you.
So a returned parcel sitting unopened in your storeroom is not a neutral state — it is a countdown. And when you disagree with the outcome, the seller dispute window is short: raise it via Seller Centre within 3 days after the shipping period ends.
Two more seller-side mechanics worth knowing:
- SSL vs non-SSL matters. With Shopee Supported Logistics, Shopee investigates non-receipt claims and parcel mishandling on your behalf. With non-SSL couriers, you provide the shipment evidence and chase the courier for compensation.
- Document everything. Sellers are expected to submit valid evidence (consignment notes, photos) — and buyers with suspicious patterns get placed on a watch list, which only helps if disputes are raised with evidence.
Putting a number on it
A returned order costs roughly:
(goods you cannot resell) + (forward shipping, if you bear it) + (return shipping, if you bear it) + (unsuccessful order fee, if charged) − (commission you no longer pay)
The commission line is the one people forget as a credit: on our RM15 reference order the commission is one of the larger single lines, and a returned order simply never incurs it.
Then convert it into a per-order cost, because that is the number that belongs in your pricing:
expected return cost per order = (cost per return) × (your return rate)
Example (illustrative assumptions, not a quotation): if a return costs you RM8 all-in and 3% of orders come back, that is RM0.24 on every order you ship — before you have paid a single platform fee. On a thin-margin SKU, that is a pricing decision, not a rounding error.
Model it properly: the free SEA Profit Calculator applies the full fee stack — commission, the 3.78% transaction fee, the RM0.54 platform support fee, first-mile logistics and FX — so you can see the net profit on the orders that don't come back, and judge how much returns room your margin can absorb.
