China to Malaysia Shipping Costs for E-commerce Sellers
China to Malaysia Shipping Costs for E-commerce Sellers
If you sell from China into Malaysia, your first-mile cost — moving stock from your supplier to Malaysian buyers — is the one fee you cannot look up. Shopee and TikTok publish commission tables. Nobody publishes a rate card for a carton from Shenzhen to Kuala Lumpur.
This guide explains the three line types, why forwarders won't put a price online, and how to estimate your per-unit first-mile cost by weight before you set your selling price.
Why there is no public price for first-mile
Every other cost in your P&L is now quasi-public. First-mile is not, for three reasons:
- Forwarders quote privately. Rates are sent over chat, per shipment, and are not posted anywhere.
- Prices move week to week. Fuel, air cargo space, and demand peaks (9.9, 11.11, pre-Raya) shift the number constantly. A quote from last month may be stale.
- The price depends on your shipment, not just the route. Weight and volume, whether goods are "general" or "sensitive" (batteries, liquids, pastes), air vs sea, and your monthly volume all change the rate.
The practical consequence: any figure you find online — including the ones below — is a planning estimate, not a quote. Treat it as a band to sanity-check your pricing, then confirm the real number with your own forwarder.
The three line types
Most China→Malaysia e-commerce volume moves on one of three lines. The estimates below are our market planning figures (in MYR), as of 2026-10-09:
| Line type | Planning estimate (per kg) | Minimum charge | Typical transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light packet (parcel line) | ~RM3.50/kg | ~RM2.00 | 7–12 days | Light, non-restricted goods |
| Standard line | ~RM4.50/kg | ~RM3.00 | 5–8 days | General goods, faster |
| Sensitive-goods line | ~RM6.50/kg | ~RM5.00 | varies | Batteries, liquids, pastes |
How to read this:
- Light packet is the cheapest per-kg option and the default for small, light, general goods. Slower, but for a low-cost SKU the saving matters.
- Standard line costs roughly a ringgit more per kilo and is faster. Worth it for higher-value or time-sensitive SKUs.
- Sensitive-goods line is for anything a forwarder classifies as restricted — power banks, cosmetics (liquids/pastes), perfumes, aerosols. It carries the highest per-kg rate because it needs special handling.
Every line also has a minimum charge. For light parcels, the minimum — not the per-kg rate — is what you actually pay (see below).
How to estimate your per-unit first-mile cost
Three steps:
- Convert weight to kilograms (grams ÷ 1000).
- Multiply by the per-kg rate for your line.
- Compare to the minimum — you pay whichever is higher.
| Item weight | Line | Per-kg math | Charged (min applies?) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 g (a phone case) | Light packet | 0.08 × RM3.50 = RM0.28 | RM2.00 (min bites) |
| 300 g | Light packet | 0.30 × RM3.50 = RM1.05 | RM2.00 (min bites) |
| 500 g | Light packet | 0.50 × RM3.50 = RM1.75 | RM2.00 (min bites) |
| 1 kg | Light packet | 1.00 × RM3.50 = RM3.50 | RM3.50 |
| 2 kg | Light packet | 2.00 × RM3.50 = RM7.00 | RM7.00 |
| 5 kg | Standard | 5.00 × RM4.50 = RM22.50 | RM22.50 |
The lesson for light SKUs: your first-mile cost is the minimum charge, flat, until the parcel is heavy enough to clear it. A 500 g order and an 80 g order cost the same to ship. That flat floor is why very cheap, very light items are so sensitive to volume — the per-unit first-mile cost barely falls no matter how you optimise.
How first-mile stacks with your platform fees
First-mile is different from platform fees in when it hits you:
- First-mile is paid upfront, per unit, before anything sells. It is a cost of getting the unit into position.
- Platform fees (commission, payment fee, platform support fee, tax) are deducted after the sale, out of your payout.
So both land on the same unit of profit. A phone case that looks like a 30% margin on the platform-fee math alone can drop to the mid-20s once first-mile is added. To see all six cost layers side by side — commission, payment fee, service fee, tax, first-mile, and FX loss — on a single order, work through our step-by-step example in How to Calculate Your Real Profit Per Order on Shopee Malaysia.
If you're also weighing whether to sell as a cross-border or local seller, note that first-mile is a cross-border-only cost — see Can Foreigners Sell on Shopee Malaysia?. For the tax that only cross-border sellers pay, see Malaysia Tax for Cross-Border Sellers: SST and the 10% LVG Tax.
Bottom line
- First-mile has no public price: it's negotiated per shipment and moves weekly.
- Budget around RM3.50/kg (light), RM4.50/kg (standard), RM6.50/kg (sensitive), with minimums of RM2/RM3/RM5.
- For light items, the minimum charge is your real cost.
- Always confirm with your forwarder before you price a SKU.
