How Marketplace Sellers in Malaysia Get Paid: Payouts & FX

How Marketplace Sellers in Malaysia Get Paid: Payouts, Fees and FX Loss

Revenue and cash are different things. A sale on Shopee or TikTok Shop MY doesn't land in your account the moment the buyer pays — it clears on a settlement schedule, sits in your seller balance, and is withdrawn subject to a few small fees. And if you sell cross-border, a slice is lost to FX along the way.

Here's the mechanics, platform by platform.

Settlement: when the money becomes withdrawable

Shopee MY releases funds through its escrow ("Shopee Guarantee") system:

Trigger Release to seller balance
SSL channel, delivered Within 3 calendar days
Non-SSL channel, delivered Within 7 calendar days
Buyer confirms receipt early Within 24 hours
Risk-held / return-in-flight orders May be held until the 15-day return window closes

TikTok Shop MY uses a dynamic, tiered settlement period based on shop performance (counted from delivery):

Tier Settlement period
Introductory (new/screening) 31 days
Standard 8 days
Accelerated 5 days
Express 1 day

Two honest notes: TikTok publishes this tier framework across markets, but the MY-specific tier table isn't on an official MY page we could verify — check your own Finance > Payments screen for the tier you're actually on. And settlement is not withdrawal: the clock above starts only once the order is delivered.

Withdrawing: getting the balance to your bank

Shopee MY TikTok Shop MY
When After release to seller balance After settlement, if balance > 0
Minimum RM1 Not published for MY — check Finance
Free manual withdrawals First 3 per week —
Extra withdrawal fee RM0.12 (4th+ per week) —
Automatic withdrawal App only (weekly / fortnightly / 1st of month) Available (incl. weekly)
Bank arrival 1–3 business days 1–3 business days

The withdrawal fee is small, but the frequency cap is worth knowing: if you manually withdraw more than three times a week on Shopee, each extra withdrawal costs RM0.12. Batching withdrawals avoids it entirely.

FX loss: the cost that hides in the conversion

Every cross-border seller buys in CNY and receives MYR. Somewhere in the chain — settlement, withdrawal, or the final conversion to CNY — the rate moves and a percentage is lost. Our working assumption for planning is ~1% of procurement cost.

Why bother counting 1%? Because it compounds across the catalogue. On RM10,000 of monthly revenue, that's RM100 per month — an amount that quietly eats into a margin you already fought to compute. Ignoring it doesn't remove it; it just means your profit numbers are optimistic. For the full per-order treatment, see How to Calculate Your Real Profit Per Order on Shopee Malaysia.

Why settlement timing is a cash-flow cost

The gap between a sale and its settlement is money you've already spent but can't yet use. On our RM15 order you've paid for the goods and the inbound shipping before the buyer's payment clears. On TikTok's standard tier that gap is 8 days; on the introductory tier, 31. Multiply that float by your order volume and it becomes working capital you must keep in the pipeline to fund the next batch of stock. Faster settlement tiers aren't a convenience — they compress how much cash is tied up at any moment, which for a lean cross-border operation is the difference between reinvesting and stalling.

Reconciling what actually landed

Fees are deducted line by line, so the number that hits your balance is rarely the number you expected. Both platforms keep a transaction-level breakdown — Shopee under My Income > My Tax Invoices, TikTok under Finance > Transactions > Settled. Before you scale a SKU, open one settled order and check the commission, payment fee, and support fee lines against this guide. That single reconciliation will tell you more about your real margin than any estimate.

Payout account routes: a factual comparison

Where the money lands determines when the FX loss is realised. Two broad routes exist — this is a description of the mechanics, not a recommendation:

Route Currency in Conversion point Public note
Malaysian bank account MYR None at payout (MYR in, MYR out) Withdrawal settles in MYR; you need a MY bank account
Cross-border payout / collection service MYR, then converted At the service, when you move funds onward Adds a conversion step; provider fees vary and are outside this guide

Either way, the currency conversion — and its ~1% drag — is part of your cost, not a rounding error.
